La Casaccia Winery – Monferrato

Over a century of traditions and fine wines. The La Casaccia winery is located in Cella Monte, among the splendid hills of Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria. “Today we want to live and work in harmony with nature: this is why we have chosen to do organic farming“, this is the motto of Elena, Giovanni, Margherita, Marcello. This is the spirit with which an entire family decided to continue the business of their ancestors and to cultivate the fruits, producing special wines to which we wanted to dedicate a wine box.

Not just organic wines. Sustainability is a fundamental element in all the activities of this small Piedmontese winery. From the photovoltaic panels that feed the company to the cistern that collects rainwater, up to the wood stoves … That of their own wood.

Another unparalleled feature of La Casaccia is the so-called infernot. It is a historical environment, unique and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site of the Monferrato wine culture. What we find in this cellar (and in the photo) is truly special. Entirely excavated in the rock, the Pietra da Cantoni, with chisels of generations who lived in other times (their great great grandfather!) Has in its heart a round table, strictly in stone, like the shelves that surround it. An environment certainly not created for pleasure, in fact, the temperature and humidity are constant throughout the year. Ideal for a stable storage of traditional food bottles. It goes without saying that it becomes a picturesque meeting place and conviviality.

The vineyards are trained in espalier with the Guyot pruning system. Nothing is left to chance: for each plant a single branch and a spur of two buds are raised each year for the following year. The stripping and binding of the shoots are also manual, as well as the stripping. Fertilization takes place using organic substances every two or three years and, if necessary, also with mineral products extracted from quarries (potassium and magnesium sulphate). Another important detail, the ground is left with grass in the inter-row and is mechanically worked under the row.

What about the wines? Between grignolino, freisa, barbera and chardonnay the produced labels are many and varied: Ernesto, Poggeto, Monfiorenza, Giuanin, Bricco dei bosco, Calichè, Charnò, La Casaccia brut. To find out more details on the wines we have chosen for you, please refer to the La Casaccia Wine Box page. A real gem made in Monferrato that we hope you will appreciate.

The Bigagnoli Since 2012 Winery – April

Alessio’s story is brand new, and just began in 2012! The wine making project, however, came from years of studies, trials and errors, discoveries, passion and hard work. After a few years as a garagiste, he won the 2012 edition of the Garage Wine Contest in Genoa with his AKA, a Bardolino Chiaretto traditional method. In that precise moment the idea of Bigagnolisince 2012 was born.

That project would have been anything but easy, but he had finally received the confirmations he had been looking for. That acknowledgment gave him the strength and the awarenes she needed. So, despite the tough historical moment for those intending to start a business, he decided to embark on this wonderful adventure. His starting point was a vineyard owned by his father Raffaello and his brother Giuseppe. He took care of his small plot of land through out the summer and the following autumn, and it went right up to its first harvest. A friend allowed him to take his grapes to his cellar and personally follow the entirewine making process.

With his first bottle in his hands, he was at the starting point of a story to be told!

The vineyard

Its vineyards are located on a hilly terrain of morainic origin in the city of Bardolino, precisely in Calmasino, the town where Alessio was born and raised. Calmasino is a small village on the hills that flank the east shore of Lake Garda where the climate and soil deeply characterize the local wines. The vineyard has an area of about 5000 meters with vines ranging in age from 5 to 30 years. The cultivated varieties are Garganega, Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta. Alessio’s dream would be to create a French-style CRU Calmasino, and we can’t wait to see that day!

The Wines Chosen For You

Bardolino DOC Classic Chiaretto

A beautiful rosé with a bright color and an olfactory bouquet of pleasantly acidulous red fruits. The tantalizing spicy note and good acidity go so well with its sapidity. It is perfect with fresh water fish, and asian cuisine such as sushi, and tempura.

Scrum Red Wine

In the game of rugby, scrum is the clash of sixteen players, during which they release all their strength and intertwine in a single, harmonious movement. This wine is a homage to rugby, the sport that Alessio loves the most. Scrum is a blend of two grapes: one more elegant and refined – Corvina, 80% – the other rougher and more impetuous – Oseleta, 20%. Like two teams, they meet to create a unique and unbeatable blend of aromas and flavors. Their playground is clayver, an innovative ceramic amphora that allows the grapes to fully express their characteristics, without being masked by wood. Finally, sixteen months of refinement: one for each player. A late harvest for Alessio’s most personal wine. A beautiful concentration that leaves room for cleanliness and elegance, spice, hints of leather and refined tannins. The perfect pairing for a lightly seared steak, and a pleasant surprise with tandoori chicken!

Le Vigne di San Pietro Winery – April

The Vigne di San Pietro are a small area in the morainic hills near the Garda lake. The company of about 10 hectares was founded in 1980 by Sergio and Franca Nerozzi, parents of Carlo Nerozzi, current owner of the company. His father decided to move the family who lived in the city, looking for a place that could combine beauty, nature and productivity. After two years of patient research, destiny brought them to a unique place, a stone’s throw from beautiful Verona and Lake Garda.

The land is rich and suited to produce wine, and many ancient remains testify to this. The soil is clayey, calcareous, morainic, of glacial origin, rich in minerals. The microclimate, which is affected by the nearby Lake Garda, helps the vine to express itself and make the most of the soil. The vines are grown in the middle of a small area full of tree varieties, that create a wide biodiversity very useful for the balanced development of the vineyards.

Carlo is an architect by training, a creative person and now a vigneron. For him, wine is a “medium”, an expressive means that facilitates cultural mediation, the encounter and exchange of knowledge between people. For over thirty years he has been practicing this profession, also helped by his friend Federico Giotto, a young agronomist and oenologist who has helped him to express his style in making wine with greater rigor and technical expertise. He loves elegant, interesting wines, which express depth without impetuousness, which know how to evolve over time by amplifying what is initially only perceived. He loves minerality, transparent and warm colors, subtle and seductive scents. This is what he wants to express with his wines.

The land is not worked and the grass in the vineyards is managed mechanically without the use of herbicides. Green manuring is used to enrich soils and increase biodiversity. The grapes are harvested by hand in crates and processed after cooling within a few hours of harvesting. The varieties present are Garganega, Trebbiano, Trebbianello, Manzoni Bianco, Cortese for the white grapes, Corvina, Rondinella, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the red grapes.

The Pialli Winery

The Pialli family has been producing wines since the 1960s. Both grandparents Silvio Tognetti (CìoBacaro) and Gregorio Pialli owned small vineyards and each made and sold their own wine. Typical productions, at that time, were Tocai Rosso and Garganega. In 1999 both grandparents stopped their activities and in 2001 the new generation began the transformation of the company by combining the two properties into a single winery, focusing exclusively on the vinification of Tocai Rosso di Barbarano. The vineyards were immediately converted to organic. Today the company has 4.5 hectares of vineyards for a total annual production ranging from 13,000 to 20,000 depending on the vintage. It is now led by Alessandro Pialli, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

The company and the vineyards are located on the east side of the Berici Hills, in the old cliff where the sea in ancient times carved out slopes and vertical walls. The soils in this area are very particular, varying from the classic clayey red soils typical for the Berici hills to become drastically calcareous with white and pink flakes. Today Pialli works 7 plots with different terrains and different exposures. After many years of testing and experimentation they have come to produce 4 types of Tai Rosso, each of which conveys the characteristics of its own terroir.

We have chosen 4 labels for our Nature and Magnificent wine tasting option boxes:

Rosso Calbin 2019 – Tai Rosso IGT Veneto

The red Tai in its traditional version but with a modern twist. The red Tai 4.0. Rosso Calbin presents the best young and varietal traits of this grape. The nose immediately presents bloody and peppery notes typical of red Tai, together with floral notes of violet and fruity notes of small red fruits. The freshness and minerality of this wine are remarkably balanced. Our suggestion is to play with the serving temperatures to discover its versatility. Try it at about 14 degrees for an aperitif and at about 18 degrees with a boiled or a grilled meat. In both cases it will not be forgotten!

  • Grape variety – Tai Rosso
  • Alcohol content – 12,5/13,5% Vol.
  • Serving temperature – 16°C
  • In the vineyard – Spurred cordon, guyot
  • Harvest – By hand in small boxes
  • Vinification and aging – One week maceration in steel tanks, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Six months in 500 liter and 15 hl French oak and cherry barrels
  • Characteristics – Fruity and soft wine

Cio Bacaro 2017 – Barbarano DOC Colli Berici

The red Tai reserve of the Barbarano sub-area. It shows structure and complexity while maintaining a masterful balance. It immediately strikes with a powerful sip and gives way to freshness and peppery returns, intoxicating the nose with spicy notes and ripe red fruit. A real star of the show!

Gregorio 2015 – Barbarano DOC Colli Berici

The best Tai of the company, an idea that came to Alessandro after his oenological studies in Verona, the land of Amarone. His bet on the withering of the red Tai was perfectly successful for us. A tribute to his grandfather Gregorio, and he could only be proud of it. Withering in plateaus and a long fermentation in exhausted woods that gives us a Tai of an unprecedented complexity, full of personality and character. It gave great satisfaction with a well-sauced veal with tuna sauce, made without shortcuts and with all the trimmings.

  • Grape variety – Tai Rosso
  • Alcohol content – 16% Vol.
  • Serving temperature – 18°C
  • In the vineyard – Calcareous marly soils and red clays full of skeleton; spurred cordon, guyot

  • Vinification and aging – Natural drying for about 1 month. Maceration for 3 weeks in oak vats. Aging for about 30-36 months in 500-liter French oak barrels and subsequent aging in the bottle for 6 months
  • Characteristics – In the earth and in the glass, from a young, pale wine in color to a great red from aging. Gregorio, Tai at maximum power, structured, but elegant, delicate, yet powerful, is the result of a perfect ripening of the best grapes, slightly dried and long macerated

Ombre d’ambra 2017 – Garganega IGT Veneto

A garganega that will remain in your thoughts. A maceration that gives intense sweet aromas of orange blossom, honey, vanilla and is kept alive by a wonderful acidity and minerality. The mouth finish is pure almond, typical for this variety. We recommend it with rabbit stew, as long asyou don’t finish the bottle while you are still cooking!

  • Alcohol content – 12,5% Vol.
  • Serving temperature – 10/14°C
  • Harvest – Late harvest
  • Vinification and aging – Maceration for 2 weeks and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts followed by aging in barrique for 15 months
  • Characteristics – Amber yellow color, floral and fruity aromas

Love is in the Tai

February is for lovers. And in February we want to make you fall in love with Tai Rosso, the most representative wine of the Mill Valley a picturesque corner of the Berici Hills, in the southern province of Vicenza.

Strolling through the paths of the Mill Valley, you overlook the gentle hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, dotted with ancient water mills dating back to the Middle Ages. And if this idyllic landscapes were not enough to make you fall in love, just think that the small and winged bunch of Tai Rosso has the shape of a heart, and its leaves turn fiery red in the foliage period.

This adorable wine warms your senses with its brilliant ruby red color and its hints of small red fruit, violet and cyclamen, whitepepper and cloves. Tai Rosso has traditionally been a simple table wine, but today it shows features above and beyond expectations, thanks to the renewed attention to the optimal exposure of the volcanic hilly areas and to the low yields in the vineyard.

As in a beautiful love story, even with Tai Rosso, care is the basis for great satisfaction and surprising turnouts.

So, since 2009, the disciplinary measures allow a reserve version that enhances the potential and versatility of this grape. We also found it particularly intriguing as a rosé sparkling wine, a true flirt. Red Tai offers many opportunities for food and wine pairing. Try the rosé sparkling with Vicenza-style or creamed cod, a party for your senses!

In its traditional and reserve version, it will surprise you with classic Veneto dishes: ‘soppressa e bollito con pearà’. Its spicy hints go perfectly with this peppery sauce of bread, broth, and marrow; its delicate freshness goes well with the succulence of boiled meat. Try it with marinated tongue, it is unforgettable!

Stay tuned to discover the wineries we chose this month. Late subscriber and you don’t want to miss the Tai? Contact us directly.
